Hydrochlorothiazide (Hctz)

Do's

• Take hydrochlorothiazide by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily in the morning with or without food. Be cautious not to take the medication too close to bedtime, as this may lead to the need to wake up to urinate. It is best to take this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime.
• The dosage of hydrochlorothiazide is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
• If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take hydrochlorothiazide at least 4 hours before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse (for example, if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Mild side effects:

• Dizziness
• Weakness
• Tiredness
• Headache
• Muscle cramps
• High blood glucose (sugar)
• Sensitivity to sunlight
• Sexual problems
• Gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea or constipation

More severe side effects (rare):

• Pancreatitis

Hydrochlorothiazide may increase your risk of skin cancer. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when outdoors. Regular skin examinations may be recommended.
