Lotensin (Benazepril)

Do’s

• Take Lotensin by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice daily.
• If using the suspension form, shake the bottle well before each dose and measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. 
• The dosage is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment, and for children, it is also based on weight.
• Use Lotensin regularly to obtain the most benefit from it, and take it at the same time(s) each day to help remember. 
• Continue taking this medication even if feeling well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
• It may take 1 to 2 weeks before experiencing the full benefit of the medication. If there is no improvement or if the condition worsens, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not use a household spoon to measure the suspension form, as it may not provide the correct dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Headache
• Dizziness 
• Cough 

Serious Side Effects:

• Liver problems, such as loss of appetite, stomach pain (especially on the upper right side), tiredness, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and individuals may experience other effects. If any unusual symptoms or discomfort are experienced while taking Lotensin, seek medical advice promptly.

Lotensin can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if used during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Inform your healthcare provider immediately if pregnancy is detected. 

Breastfeeding while using Lotensin is not recommended.

Lotensin can worsen renal function, especially in patients with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m or serum creatinine greater than 3 mg/dL. Monitor renal function closely and adjust the dosage accordingly.

Lotensin may interact with other medications, such as lithium, neprilysin inhibitors, and gold, potentially leading to adverse effects. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications being taken, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Lotensin tablets should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture, while the suspension should be refrigerated and discarded after 30 days. Keep all medications away from children and pets and avoid flushing medications down the toilet or pouring them into drains.

Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes, or those taking other medications, may be at a higher risk of developing a wider range of side effects. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended, especially when initiating treatment with Lotensin or when the dosage is adjusted.
