Isoptin (Verapamil) is used to treat high blood pressure, a condition where lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

It belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers, and it works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Additionally, Verapamil is used to prevent chest pain (angina), which may help to increase the ability to exercise and decrease the frequency of angina attacks.

Verapamil is also indicated to control heart rate in individuals with a fast or irregular heartbeat, such as atrial fibrillation, helping to lower the heart rate and increase comfort during exercise.

Do’s

  • Take Isoptin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually 3-4 times daily with or without food.
  • Take your medication consistently, at the same times each day. This helps regulate the medication in your body.
  • Continue taking Isoptin even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
  • For chest pain prevention, take Isoptin regularly as prescribed. It won't treat sudden chest pain attacks.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Isoptin. Abruptly stopping can worsen your condition.

Don'ts

  • Don't adjust your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Don't take Isoptin to treat sudden chest pain attacks. Use other medications your healthcare provider prescribes for those.
  • Don't stop taking Isoptin abruptly. Your healthcare provider may need to gradually decrease your dose.
  • Don't hesitate to tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsens.
