Monopril HCTZ (Fosinopril Hctz)

Do’s

• The dosage of Monopril HCTZ is individualized based on the patient's needs. It is typically started at a low dose and gradually increased as necessary. 
• Monopril HCTZ should be taken by mouth with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It is usually taken once daily. 
• If you take this medication too close to bedtime, you may need to wake up to urinate. It is generally recommended to take this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime.
• Certain medications and substances can interact with Monopril HCTZ and affect its absorption or effectiveness. For example, antacids containing aluminum or magnesium can decrease the absorption of fosinopril. If you are taking such antacids, take them at least 2 hours before or after taking Monopril HCTZ. Similarly, if you are taking bile acid-binding resins (cholestyramine or colestipol) to lower cholesterol, take Monopril HCTZ at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications.
• To get the most benefit from Monopril HCTZ, take it regularly and at the same time each day. This will help you remember to take the medication consistently.
• It may take several weeks before the full benefits of Monopril HCTZ are realized. Continue taking the medication even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not experience noticeable symptoms. 
• If your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase, inform your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects: 

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Cough
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting 

Serious Side Effects: 

• Allergic reactions
• Severe dizziness
• Fainting
• Signs of kidney problems (such as changes in urine output or blood in the urine)
• Signs of liver problems (such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent nausea/vomiting)
• Signs of high potassium levels (such as muscle weakness or irregular heartbeat)
• Signs of low blood pressure (such as lightheadedness or fainting)

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the serious side effects occur.

If you experience laryngeal stridor or angioedema of the face, tongue, or glottis (which can cause airway obstruction), discontinue the use of Monopril HCTZ immediately and seek appropriate medical treatment.

Monopril HCTZ is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking Monopril HCTZ, inform your healthcare provider immediately. 

Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding, as Monopril HCTZ can pass into breast milk.

Monopril HCTZ may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, certain cholesterol-lowering drugs (bile acid-binding resins), and lithium.

Monopril HCTZ can affect kidney and liver function. Regular monitoring of kidney function, including blood tests, may be necessary.

Monopril HCTZ can cause electrolyte imbalances, such as changes in serum electrolyte levels. Regular monitoring of electrolyte levels, including potassium, is important, especially if you are taking other medications that can affect electrolyte balance.

Monopril HCTZ can cause low blood pressure, especially when starting the medication or increasing the dosage. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness or fainting, contact your healthcare provider.

Monopril HCTZ should be used with caution in patients with a history of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, gout, lupus, or certain blood disorders. Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before starting Monopril HCTZ.
