Cardene (Nicardipine Hydrochloride)

Do’s

• Take it as prescribed. Follow your doctor's instructions on dosage and frequency (usually 3 times a day).
• Take it consistently. Consistency is key for Cardene to work effectively. Aim to take it at the same time each day.
• Take it with or without food. Food doesn't affect Cardene's absorption.
• Keep taking it even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so continue taking Cardene as prescribed even if you feel good.
• Tell your doctor if your condition worsens. If your blood pressure remains high, chest pain worsens, or any other symptoms arise, inform your doctor.

Don't

• Don't adjust your dosage: Don't change your dosage without consulting your doctor. Your doctor may adjust it gradually based on your response to treatment.
• Don't skip doses. Taking Cardene inconsistently can reduce its effectiveness.
• Don't stop taking it abruptly. Stopping Cardene suddenly can be dangerous. Always talk to your doctor before stopping it.

Common side effects:

• Swelling of the feet
• Flushing
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dry cough
• Constipation
• Rash
• Fatigue
• Loss of taste
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Itching
• Gas
• Digestive discomfort
• Anxiety

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if experienced):

• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Worsening or more frequent angina (chest pain)
• Liver failure (rare)
• Kidney failure
• Increased levels of potassium in the blood
• Severe narrowing of the aortic valve in the heart (aortic stenosis)
• Low blood pressure
• Brain injury or bleed

Disclose any allergies to nicardipine or other Cardene ingredients to your doctor or pharmacist.

Inform your doctor about:

• Aortic stenosis (heart valve problem)
• Liver disease
• Kidney disease

Tell your doctor or dentist about all medications you take before any surgery.

Cardene may cause dizziness. Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, machinery) until you feel steady. Limit consumption of both, as they can worsen dizziness with Cardene.

Cardene should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding as it's unknown if Cardene passes into breast milk.
