Loniten (Minoxidil)

Do’s

• Before starting Loniten, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
• Loniten is taken by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice a day.
• The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on weight. Your healthcare provider may instruct you to start with a low dose and gradually increase it. Follow their instructions carefully.
• Take Loniten and your other blood pressure medications regularly to derive the most benefit. To help you remember, take them at the same time(s) each day. 
• Continue taking your medications even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
• It may take several days to a couple of weeks before experiencing the full benefit of Loniten. If your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Do not discontinue taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may worsen if the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

• Rash
• Breast pain or tenderness
• Retention of salt and water, leading to increased fluid volume and edema
• Worsening or appearance of angina (chest pain)
• Increased heart rate and cardiac output
• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing
• Serious heart problems 

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you experience any unusual symptoms while taking Loniten, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.

You should not use Loniten if you have pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor). Consult your healthcare provider before using Loniten if you have this condition.

Before taking Loniten, inform your healthcare provider if you have congestive heart failure, angina (chest pain), recent heart attack, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), or migraine headaches.

Monitor your blood pressure and pulse (heart rate) regularly while taking Loniten. Learn how to monitor your own blood pressure and pulse at home and share the results with your healthcare provider.

Loniten should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture, and kept away from children and pets. It should not be flushed down the toilet or poured into a drain unless instructed to do so.
