Tarka is a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). It is a combination medication containing two active ingredients, trandolapril (an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor) and verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). These components work by relaxing veins and arteries, facilitating easier blood flow through them.

Do’s

  • Before initiating the use of Tarka and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Take this medication by mouth with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once or twice daily. Swallow the tablets whole.
  • The dosage of Tarka is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage.
  • To derive the most benefit from this medication, it should be taken regularly. To help remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.
  • Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
  • It may take up to several weeks before you experience the full benefit of this medication.
  • If your condition does not improve or worsens (e.g., if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase), inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

  • Avoid crushing or chewing the tablets, as doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Do not discontinue this medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may worsen when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased under medical supervision.

Common Side Effects:

  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Bradycardia

Some side effects of Tarka may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Your healthcare provider may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and individual reactions may vary. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized information and guidance.

A very serious reaction may occur if you are receiving injections for bee/wasp sting allergy (desensitization) and are also taking Tarka. Ensure that all your healthcare providers are aware of the medicines you are using.

Tarka should not be used if you have a heart rhythm disorder, low blood pressure, or a serious heart condition such as "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker).

Tarka should also not be taken within 36 hours before or after taking medicine that contains sacubitril (such as Entresto). If you have diabetes, do not use Tarka together with any medication that contains aliskiren (a blood pressure medicine).

Tarka is not recommended for use during pregnancy, as it can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if taken during the second or third trimester.

Many drugs can affect Tarka, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed here. Inform your healthcare provider about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.

Liver damage is possible with this medication. If you experience any signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, generally feeling unwell, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, itching, muscle pain, rash, or swollen glands, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions, and individual circumstances may warrant additional considerations. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized information and guidance.
