Lotrel is a two-in-one medication: It combines the effects of two different types of drugs to manage high blood pressure.

Lotrel works by specifically relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly. By lowering blood pressure, Lotrel may help prevent serious health complications such as strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Do's

  • Take Lotrel by mouth, with or without food, following your healthcare provider's instructions. It's typically a once-a-day medication.
  • Take Lotrel regularly, ideally at the same time each day. This helps ensure it works effectively in your body.
  • Continue taking Lotrel even if you feel good and your blood pressure seems under control. High blood pressure often doesn't cause noticeable symptoms.
  • Wait up to 1 to 2 weeks to experience the full blood pressure-lowering effects of Lotrel.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your blood pressure doesn't improve or worsen (remains high or increases). They may need to adjust your dosage or treatment plan.

The amount of Lotrel you need will depend on your specific health condition and how your body responds to the medication. Your healthcare provider will determine the right dosage for you.

Common side effects may include:

  • Water retention (edema) in legs and arms
  • Edema in the lungs
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sexual problems
  • Drowsiness

Serious side effects:

  • Chest pain or heart attacks, especially in individuals with severe heart problems
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, indicating an allergic reaction
  • Signs of high potassium levels, such as muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or tingling sensations
  • Signs of kidney problems, such as decreased urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, or fatigue
  • Signs of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent nausea

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Lotrel,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, especially to amlodipine, benazepril, or other similar medications.

Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, particularly if you have experienced allergic reactions involving swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, undergone blood filtering procedures, have liver disease, or a certain heart problem (aortic stenosis).

Be cautious of dizziness, which may be worsened by alcohol or marijuana use. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you feel safe doing so. Limit alcohol consumption and discuss marijuana use with your healthcare provider.

Stay hydrated to avoid dehydration caused by severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience these symptoms severely.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) before undergoing surgery.

Be aware that Lotrel may increase your potassium levels. Consult your healthcare provider before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.

If you are older than 65, be extra cautious of potential side effects like dizziness, increased potassium levels, and changes in urine output (indicating kidney problems).

Pregnant women should not take Lotrel as it can harm the unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before breastfeeding as Lotrel passes into breast milk.
