Micardis HCT (telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.

Do’s

  • The dosage of Micardis HCT is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
  • Micardis HCT should be taken by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. It is usually taken once daily.
  • To ensure the maximum benefit from Micardis HCT, take it regularly at the same time each day. If you have any questions about your dosing schedule, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Continue taking Micardis HCT even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not experience noticeable symptoms. It may take up to 4 weeks before you start to notice the full benefits of this medication.
  • If you are taking certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol), take Micardis HCT at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications. This helps to avoid any potential interactions.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens. This includes if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.

Don’ts

  • Do not change the prescribed dosage unless directed to do so by a healthcare provider.
  • Avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to minimize the need to get up to urinate during the night.

Common Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension), which may cause symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
  • Electrolyte imbalances, such as low levels of potassium or sodium in the blood, which can cause symptoms like muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or confusion
  • Kidney problems, including changes in urine output, swelling in the feet or ankles, or signs of kidney dysfunction
