Moduretic (Amiloride/Hctz)

Do’s

• The dosage of Moduretic is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the specific dosage. 
• Moduretic should be taken by mouth with food. Taking it with food can help minimize stomach upset. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider regarding the timing and frequency of doses.
• Take Moduretic at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid the need to wake up during the night to urinate. This can help ensure a good night's sleep. If you have any questions about when to take Moduretic, consult your healthcare provider.
• To get the most benefit from Moduretic, take it regularly and consistently. Try to take it at the same time(s) each day to help establish a routine.
• Even if you start feeling better, continue taking Moduretic as directed by your healthcare provider, as most people with high blood pressure do not experience any symptoms.
• If you are also taking certain drugs to lower your cholesterol, such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol, take Moduretic at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications. This spacing can help prevent any potential interactions between the medications.
• Regularly monitor your condition and keep track of your blood pressure readings. If your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure remains high or increases, inform your healthcare provider. They can assess your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

Don’ts

• Do not change the prescribed dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

• Headache
• Weakness
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Tiredness (fatigue)

These side effects are generally mild and may not require medical attention. However, if these side effects persist or worsen, inform your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reaction: hives, trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Pounding or rapid heartbeat
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Signs of electrolyte imbalance: muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, excessive thirst, or increased urination

If you are allergic to amiloride, hydrochlorothiazide, or any other ingredients in Moduretic, you should not take this medication. 

Moduretic can affect the levels of electrolytes in your body, such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Have regular blood tests to monitor these levels.

Moduretic is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. If you have impaired kidney function, your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage or monitor you more closely while taking Moduretic.

Moduretic should be used with caution in patients with liver disease or impaired liver function. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage or choose an alternative treatment option.

Moduretic can affect blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely and inform your healthcare provider if you notice any changes.

Moduretic may increase the risk of gout attacks in individuals with a history of gout. Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of gout or experience symptoms such as joint pain, swelling, or redness.

Moduretic should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before taking this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding.

Moduretic may interact with other medications, including certain diuretics, blood pressure medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and lithium. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
