Avapro, also known as irbesartan, is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Hypertension: Avapro is used for the treatment of hypertension, which is high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
  • Diabetic Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: Avapro is indicated for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, an elevated serum creatinine, and proteinuria (>300 mg/day). It is used to reduce the rate of progression of nephropathy as measured by the occurrence of doubling of serum creatinine or end-stage renal disease (need for dialysis or renal transplantation).

Do's

  • Take the recommended initial dose of Avapro, which is 150 mg once daily. The dosage can be increased to a maximum dose of 300 mg once daily as needed to control blood pressure.
  • Take the recommended target maintenance dose of 300 mg once daily for the treatment of nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients.
  • Take Avapro by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
  • Use this medication regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it and help you remember.
  • Keep taking this medication even if you feel well, as instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's specific instructions regarding the dosage and administration of Avapro.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings increase.
  • Consult your healthcare provider for guidance if you have any concerns or questions about your medication.

The dosage of Avapro is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Avapro can cause injury and death to the developing fetus. Discontinue Avapro as soon as pregnancy is detected.

Avoid combining Avapro with other medications that act on the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), such as ACE inhibitors, aliskiren, or other angiotensin receptor blockers. This combination is associated with increased risks of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and changes in renal function.

Close monitoring of blood pressure, renal function, and electrolytes is necessary for patients on Avapro and other agents that affect the RAS. Coadministration of aliskiren with Avapro is not recommended in patients with renal impairment.

In patients with depletion of intravascular volume or salt (e.g., patients treated vigorously with diuretics or on hemodialysis), the recommended initial dose of Avapro is 75 mg once daily.

Avapro has a Black Box warning due to its potential to cause death or serious injury to the fetus while a pregnant patient undergoes therapy with Avapro, especially in the last 6 months of pregnancy. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment during pregnancy or nursing.
