Cardura (Doxazosin)

Do's:  

• Take Cardura by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.  
• Start the treatment of hypertension with a typical dose of 1 mg taken orally once a day and increase up to a maximum of 16 mg once a day; for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), begin with a dose of 4 mg taken orally once a day with breakfast, increasing up to a maximum of 8 mg once a day. 
• Take the first dose of Cardura at bedtime to minimize the risk of dizziness or fainting. This is especially important when starting the medication, increasing the dose, or restarting treatment after stopping it.    
• Take Cardura regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it.  
• Consult your healthcare provider if you miss taking Cardura for a few days, as you may need to restart treatment at a low dose and gradually increase it again.  
• Get your blood pressure or prostate checked regularly by your healthcare professional while using Cardura.

Common Side Effects:

• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Shortness of breath
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Fluid retention (edema)
• Low blood pressure

Serious Side Effects:

• Fainting
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing).

Inform your doctor about any allergies to doxazosin, other alpha-blockers, or any other medications.

Be aware of potential dizziness or drowsiness, which can be exacerbated by alcohol or marijuana. Avoid activities requiring alertness until the effects subside. Limit alcohol and discuss marijuana use with your doctor.

Inform your doctor or dentist about doxazosin use before any surgery, including eye surgery.

Older adults may experience increased side effects, like dizziness and low blood pressure upon standing. This can raise the risk of falls.

Doxazosin should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your doctor.

Doxazosin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
