Proscar (Finasteride)

Do’s

• Before starting Proscar, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your healthcare provider.
• Proscar is typically taken by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once a day.
• Use Proscar regularly to obtain the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time each day. 
• Patients taking Proscar may need blood work while on the medication, including a blood test called PSA for the screening of prostate cancer. Inform the healthcare providers about taking this medication before undergoing a PSA test.

Don’ts

• Do not stop taking this medication without consulting a healthcare provider, as it may take 6 to 12 months to notice a benefit.

Sexual Side Effects:

• Trouble getting or keeping an erection
• Trouble having an orgasm
• Abnormal ejaculation
• Breast swelling or tenderness

The side effects listed above may continue even after stopping the medication. Patients are advised to discuss any concerns about these side effects with their healthcare provider

There have been reports of gynecomastia (enlargement of the breast tissue in males) in men taking finasteride. It's noted that among those reported, fifty-eight percent were taking additional medications associated with gynecomastia. Patients should promptly report any changes in their breasts, such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge, to their healthcare provider.

Proscar is not intended for use in women and should never be taken by a woman or a child. Pregnant women or those who may potentially become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken Proscar tablets due to the possibility of absorption of finasteride and the subsequent potential risk to the male fetus. If contact with crushed or broken Proscar tablets occurs, the contact area should be washed immediately with soap and water.

Before taking Proscar or making any changes to the treatment, consult a healthcare provider. This includes discussing any concerns about the medication, potential side effects, and interactions with other drugs.

For individuals taking Proscar, healthcare providers will need to adjust the PSA test result by doubling it. Any increase in PSA while taking Proscar, even if still within the normal range, should be further evaluated, as it may be a possible sign of prostate cancer.
