Flomax (tamsulosin) is indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. Flomax is not indicated for use in women or children. In addition to BPH, Flomax is also indicated to treat other common medical conditions in men, including chronic prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland not associated with bacterial infection), passage of kidney stones, and urinary retention (the inability to empty the bladder). Flomax is not approved for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
Do's
  • The dosage of Flomax is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Flomax capsules are usually taken once a day, approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
  • The capsules should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or opened.
  • Take Flomax regularly to derive the most benefit from it. To help remember, it should be taken at the same time each day.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule should be continued. Extra medicine should not be taken to make up for a missed dose.
  • If Flomax has not been taken for several days, contact your healthcare provider to determine if restarting at a lower dose is necessary.
  • It may take up to 4 weeks before symptoms improve. If the condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.
Common Side Effects:
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Abnormal ejaculation, including decreased amount of semen and ejaculation issues
  • Headaches
  • Decreased interest in sex
Serious Side Effects:
  • Fainting
  • Painful or difficult urination
  • Chest pain
  • Allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in face or throat)
  • Severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling)
  • Painful erection that lasts 4 hours or longer
This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Flomax, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Flomax should not be used if there is an allergy to tamsulosin or similar medicines such as alfuzosin, doxazosin, prazosin, silodosin, or terazosin.

Flomax should not be used in combination with strong inhibitors of CYP3A4, such as ketoconazole.

Patients should be informed about the possibility of priapism as a rare but serious side effect of treatment with Flomax and similar medications. Immediate medical attention is necessary to prevent permanent erectile dysfunction (impotence).

Prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) frequently coexist. Patients should be screened for the presence of prostate cancer before treatment with Flomax capsules and at regular intervals afterward.

Patients considering cataract or glaucoma surgery should inform their ophthalmologist that they have taken Flomax capsules to prevent potential complications.

Flomax can cause orthostatic hypotension, leading to a drop in blood pressure when moving from a sitting to a standing position. This is more likely during initiation of Flomax or when increasing the dose.

Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all medical conditions, especially liver disease, kidney disease, or prostate cancer, as Flomax may not be suitable for individuals with these conditions.

Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance regarding the use of Flomax.
