Cantharone topical liquid, also known as cantharidin, is used specifically to treat a viral skin infection called molluscum contagiosum.

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral infection that causes small, raised bumps on the skin.  It can be spread from person to person through close contact or by sharing personal items such as towels or clothing.

Cantharidin is typically applied directly to the areas on the skin with molluscum bumps once every three weeks as needed. It is usually administered by a healthcare provider at a clinic.

Do’s

  • Have Cantharidin applied by a healthcare provider only. This medication is potent and requires proper application to be effective and safe.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions exactly. This includes the frequency of application (usually every 3 weeks) and how long to leave the medication on the treated area (typically 24 hours).
  • Be aware of where the medication is applied. Avoid application near the eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals.
  • Leave the treated area uncovered by bandages.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after any contact with the treated area.
  • Rinse with plenty of water if Cantharidin gets in your eyes, nose, mouth, or genital areas. Seek medical attention immediately.

Don'ts

  • Don't apply Cantharidin yourself.
  • Don't use Cantharidin on broken or infected skin.
  • Don't apply Cantharidin near an open flame or while smoking. The medication is flammable.
  • Don't apply other medications or products to the treated area for at least 24 hours after application, or until washed off by your healthcare provider.
  • Don't continue using Cantharidin if your condition worsens or doesn't improve.
  • Avoid touching, biting, or licking the treated area.

Common side effects of Cantharone topical liquid may include:

  • Skin irritation, redness, or blistering at the application site
  • Pain or discomfort at the application site
  • Itching or burning sensation

Serious side effects of Cantharone topical liquid are rare, but they may include:

  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
  • Ulceration of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, although this is more commonly associated with oral ingestion of cantharidin
  • Electrolyte and renal function disturbances, although these are also more commonly associated with oral ingestion of cantharidin

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Cantharone topical liquid, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to cantharidin or any ingredients in Cantharidin Topical Liquid.

Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before using Cantharidin Topical Liquid. While no specific conditions are mentioned, disclose any pre-existing health issues.

Before surgery, disclose all medications (including Cantharidin Topical Liquid) to your healthcare provider.

Use Cantharidin Topical Liquid only if clearly necessary during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
