Finacea Gel (Azelaic Acid)

Do’s

• Finacea gel is for use only on the skin and should be applied exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Follow all directions on the prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
• Before applying the gel, wash the affected area with a mild soap or a soap-free cleansing lotion and pat dry with a soft towel.
• A thin layer of the medication should be applied to the affected area and gently massaged into the skin twice a day, in the morning and evening.
• Wash hands before and after applying the medication, and makeup may be applied after the medication has dried.
• Symptoms may not improve for up to 4 weeks. Call your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve after 12 weeks of treatment.
• If excessive burning, dryness, or skin irritation occurs, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

• Avoid getting the medication in the eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina. If it does get into the eyes, it should be washed out with water immediately.
• Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage unless directed by a healthcare provider.
• Avoid using other skin care products that may irritate the skin, such as astringents, abrasives, tinctures, cleansers that contain alcohol, and products that cause skin peeling.

Common Side Effects:

• Itching
• Burning or stinging sensation
• Dryness
• Redness of the skin
• Peeling or scaling of the skin
• Irritation at the application site
• Changes in skin color

Less Common Side Effects:

• Worsening of asthma
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
• Severe dizziness
• Rash
• Itching or swelling, especially of the face, tongue, or throat
