Dovonex Cream, containing calcipotriene, is used to treat plaque psoriasis. This medication is indicated for the treatment of long-term psoriasis of the skin and scalp.

The cream works by slowing down the overproduction of skin cells, which eases inflamed, scaly areas.

Do’s

  • Use only on your skin, as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Apply a thin layer and rub it in gently, typically once or twice daily depending on the formulation (ointment, cream, or foam).
  • Wash your hands after applying, unless treating your hands.
  • Use it regularly at the same time(s) each day for best results.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve after 2 weeks of treatment.

Don'ts

  • Don't apply to your face, eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.
  • Don't use it more often or for longer than prescribed.
  • Don't apply if the affected area is sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, or irritated.

Common side effects:

  • Itching
  • Skin irritation
  • Burning sensation
  • Erythema (redness of the skin)
  • Dry skin
  • Peeling of the skin
  • Rash

Serious side effects :

  • Hypercalcemia (increased levels of calcium in the blood). Symptoms may include:
    • Excessive thirst and urination
    • Constipation
    • Muscle weakness
    • Confusion
    • Com
  • Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin)
  • Worsening of psoriasis, including facial/scalp psoriasis
  • Skin atrophy (thinning of the skin)
  • Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin)
  • Folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicle)

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to calcipotriene or any ingredients in Dovonex Cream.

Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before using Dovonex Cream, especially regarding high calcium or vitamin D levels (hypercalcemia/hypervitaminosis D).

Dovonex Cream may increase sun sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience sunburn, skin blisters, or redness. Phototherapy might also need to be limited or avoided.

Older adults may experience increased side effects with Dovonex Cream.

Dovonex Cream should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It is unknown if calcipotriene passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
