Zestoretic is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure may reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack. Zestoretic contains a combination of hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic that helps prevent the body from absorbing too much salt, and lisinopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels and reduces blood pressure.

Do’s

  • Before starting Zestoretic, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
  • Take Zestoretic by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily in the morning.
  • If the medication causes increased urination, take it at least 4 hours before bedtime to prevent nighttime urination.
  • If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take Zestoretic at least 4 hours before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications to avoid interactions.
  • The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Take the medication regularly to get the most benefit from it, and to help remember, take it at the same time each day.
  • Even if you feel well, keep taking this medication, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens (if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Common Side Effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Increased urination

Severe Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue

Seek immediate medical attention if serious side effects occur.

Discuss any concerns about potential side effects with your healthcare provider, as they can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current medications.

Zestoretic should not be used if you have ever had angioedema, are unable to urinate, or are allergic to sulfa drugs or any ACE inhibitor. Additionally, it should not be taken within 36 hours before or after taking medicine that contains sacubitril (such as Entresto).

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Zestoretic may interact with other drugs, including other medicines for the treatment of high blood pressure (antihypertensives), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), aliskiren, and certain local or general anesthetics. Inform your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, as they can affect the way Zestoretic works and vice versa.

Your healthcare provider may need to change your dose and/or take other precautions, especially if you are undergoing surgery or anesthesia. Regular monitoring and blood tests may be necessary to check the levels of electrolytes affected by treatment with hydrochlorothiazide.

In patients currently being treated with a diuretic, symptomatic hypotension may occur following the initial dose of lisinopril. If the diuretic cannot be discontinued, an initial dose of lisinopril should be used under medical supervision.

Concomitant administration of Zestoretic with potassium supplements, potassium salt substitutes, or potassium-sparing diuretics may lead to increases in serum potassium.
