Uroxatral, also known as alfuzosin, is indicated for the treatment of signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult men. It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and the bladder, which can alleviate symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, inability to completely empty the bladder, dribbling at the end of urination, and a weak urine stream or a stream that stops.

Do’s

  • Before starting Uroxatral and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Uroxatral should be taken by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily after a meal. This medication works best when taken with food, and taking it on an empty stomach may reduce its effectiveness.
  • Swallow the tablets whole.
  • To prevent injury from dizziness or fainting, your healthcare provider may advise taking the first dose with food at bedtime to allow your body to adjust to its effects.
  • Take Uroxatral regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it after the same meal each day.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Don’ts

  • Do not crush or chew the tablets, as doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Uroxathral may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting, usually within a few hours after taking it. This risk is higher when first starting the drug or when restarting treatment after stopping. During these times, avoid situations where you may be injured if you faint.

Common Side Effects:

  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Fainting

Serious Side Effects:

  • Chest pain
  • Priapism (persistent painful penile erection)
  • Liver injury
  • Floppy eye syndrome

For a comprehensive understanding of the potential side effects of Uroxatral, consult a healthcare provider and review the relevant product information.

Uroxatral may interact with other medications. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

Uroxatral lowers blood pressure and may cause dizziness or fainting, especially if taken with heart or blood pressure medications. Avoid driving or hazardous activities until the effects of alfuzosin are known.

Uroxatral can affect pupils during cataract surgery. Tell your healthcare provider ahead of time that you are using this medication. Do not stop using this medicine before surgery unless your healthcare provider tells you to.

Uroxatral is contraindicated for use with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, or ritonavir, since alfuzosin blood levels are increased. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between Uroxatral and other alpha adrenergic antagonists have not been determined. However, interactions may be expected, and Uroxatral should not be used in combination with other alpha adrenergic antagonists.

There may be an increased risk of hypotension/postural hypotension and syncope when taking Uroxatral concomitantly with anti-hypertensive medication and nitrates. Concomitant use of Uroxatral with PDE5 inhibitors can potentially cause symptomatic hypotension.

Consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive understanding of the warnings and precautions associated with Uroxatral and to review the relevant product information.
