Captopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to protect the kidneys from harm due to diabetes.

Captopril should not be used during pregnancy, and breastfeeding should be avoided while using this medication. It is an ACE inhibitor that works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily.

It may be used as initial therapy for patients with normal renal function, and it can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. In the treatment of heart failure, captopril can be used in combination with diuretics and digitalis.

Do’s

  • Take it regularly. Consistency is key for Capoten to work effectively. Aim to take it at the same time each day, two or three times a day as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Take it on an empty stomach. This means at least 1 hour before a meal for optimal absorption.
  • Keep taking it even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so continue taking Capoten as prescribed even if you feel good.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve. If your blood pressure remains high or worsens after taking Capoten, inform your healthcare provider.

Don'ts

  • Don't skip doses. Taking Capoten inconsistently can reduce its effectiveness.
  • Don't take it with food. Food can interfere with how well your body absorbs Capoten.
  • Don't stop taking it without consulting your healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping Capoten can be dangerous. Always talk to your healthcare provider before adjusting your dosage.
