Capoten (Captopril)

Do’s

• Take it regularly. Consistency is key for Capoten to work effectively. Aim to take it at the same time each day, two or three times a day as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Take it on an empty stomach. This means at least 1 hour before a meal for optimal absorption.
• Keep taking it even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so continue taking Capoten as prescribed even if you feel good.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve. If your blood pressure remains high or worsens after taking Capoten, inform your healthcare provider.

Don'ts

• Don't skip doses. Taking Capoten inconsistently can reduce its effectiveness.
• Don't take it with food. Food can interfere with how well your body absorbs Capoten.
• Don't stop taking it without consulting your healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping Capoten can be dangerous. Always talk to your healthcare provider before adjusting your dosage.

Common side effects:

• Dry and persistent cough
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Rash
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Loss of taste
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Fainting
• Numbness

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if experienced):

• Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the lips and throat that can obstruct breathing
• Liver failure (rare)
• Kidney failure
• Increased levels of potassium in the blood
• Angioedema (swelling of lips and throat that can obstruct breathing)

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Capoten,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Let your healthcare provider know if you have allergies to Capoten, other ACE inhibitors, or any other medications.

Disclose any past allergic reactions with swelling, blood filtering procedures, collagen vascular diseases, or high potassium levels.

Capoten can cause dizziness, so avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen dizziness.

Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to dehydration and lightheadedness. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience these and drink plenty of fluids unless advised otherwise.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Capoten, before any surgery.

Capoten may increase potassium levels. Consult your healthcare provider before taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.

Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects like dizziness and increased potassium levels.

Capoten can harm unborn babies. Avoid getting pregnant while taking it. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Capoten passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm the infant. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
