Vagifem Vaginal Tablet is indicated for the treatment of atrophic vaginitis due to menopause. Atrophic vaginitis is a condition characterized by vaginal dryness, burning, and itching, which can cause discomfort and pain during sexual intercourse. Vagifem contains estradiol, a form of estrogen, which helps replenish estrogen levels in the vagina and relieve these symptoms.

Do’s

  • Before using Vagifem, read the patient information leaflet and instructions provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Use Vagifem as directed by your healthcare provider. The typical dosage regimen is to use one vaginal tablet daily for the first 2 weeks, and then use one vaginal tablet twice a week thereafter.
  • Vagifem Vaginal Tablet comes with a preloaded, single-use applicator. The tablet is inserted into the vagina using this applicator. If the tablet falls out before use, it should be discarded, and a new applicator/tablet should be used.
  • Gently insert the applicator into the vagina as directed by your healthcare provider. Press the plunger on the applicator to release the medication. The tablet will slowly dissolve over several hours, providing a continuous release of the hormone.
  • After using the applicator, it should be disposed of properly. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the safe disposal of the applicator.
  • The dosage of Vagifem is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Use the medication regularly and according to your prescribed dosing schedule.
  • If your condition does not improve or worsens while using Vagifem, consult your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

  • Do not increase your dose or use the medication more often or for a longer time than directed by your healthcare provider.

Vagifem Vaginal Tablet is intended for vaginal administration, but systemic absorption of the hormone estradiol can occur. This means that the hormone can enter the bloodstream and potentially have effects on other parts of the body.

Estrogen therapy, including Vagifem, may increase the risk of certain types of cancer, such as endometrial (uterine) cancer. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your healthcare provider while using Vagifem. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the uterus.

Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack, stroke, and blood clots. Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or other thromboembolic diseases.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have recently had or will be having surgery, or if you will be confined to a chair or bed for a long time (such as a long plane flight). These conditions may increase the risk of blood clots.

Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer. Regular breast self-examination and mammograms are recommended while using Vagifem.

Vagifem may interact with other medications you are taking. Consult with your healthcare provider to ensure there are no potential interactions.

Vagifem is not indicated for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of Vagifem with your healthcare provider.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions. Consult with your healthcare provider or refer to the product packaging and prescribing information for comprehensive information on the use of Vagifem Vaginal Tablet.
