Trintellix (generic name: vortioxetine) is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adults. It has not been shown to be safe and effective for use in children.

Do's
  • Before starting Trintellix and with each refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Take Trintellix by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.
  • Be sure to inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • To reduce the risk of side effects, your healthcare provider may direct you to start Trintellix at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow their instructions carefully and do not increase your dose or use the drug more often or for longer than prescribed.
  • Use Trintellix regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it at the same time each day to help you remember.
  • Keep taking Trintellix even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped.
  • If you need to stop treatment with Trintellix, consult your healthcare provider for guidance. Report any new or worsening symptoms right away.
  • It may take several weeks before you experience the full benefit of Trintellix. Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Serious Side Effects: 

  • Risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in pediatric and young adult patients taking antidepressants.

Trintellix carries a warning regarding the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in children and young adults. There is a pregnancy exposure registry that monitors pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to antidepressants during pregnancy. Healthcare providers are encouraged to register patients by calling or visiting online the National Pregnancy Registry for Antidepressants.

Trintellix is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to vortioxetine or any other ingredient in the medication, as well as in those who have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the previous two weeks.

The use of Trintellix with MAOIs intended to treat psychiatric disorders, or within 21 days of stopping treatment with Trintellix, is contraindicated due to an increased risk of serotonin syndrome. Starting Trintellix in a patient being treated with MAOIs such as linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is also contraindicated due to the increased risk of serotonin syndrome.

Patients should be informed about the concomitant use of Trintellix with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, warfarin, or other drugs that affect coagulation, as combined use has been associated with an increased risk of bleeding.

Before taking Trintellix, discuss any medical conditions with a healthcare provider, as Trintellix may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions.
