Geodon (Ziprasidone)

Do's

• Take Geodon by mouth with food, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily. 
• Swallow the capsules whole.  
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. 
• Take Geodon regularly, at the same time each day, to get the most benefit. 
• Continue taking the medication even if you feel well. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition doesn't improve or worsen. 

Don'ts

• Do not open, crush, or chew the capsules. 
• Don't stop taking Geodon without consulting your healthcare provider. 

Your healthcare provider will determine the correct dosage based on your specific condition and response to the medication. They may start with a low dose and gradually increase it to minimize side effects.  

Common side effects of Geodon may include:

• Drowsiness
• Weight gain
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Restlessness
• Rash
• Runny nose
• Cough

Serious side effects of Geodon may include:

• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)
• Allergic reaction: Symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
• Prolonged or painful erection (priapism)
• Liver damage
• Changes in blood sugar levels
• Orthostatic hypotension

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Geodon,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including to Geodon or any of its ingredients.

Share your complete medical history with your  healthcare provider, especially if you have any of the following conditions:

• Dementia
• Seizures
• Low white blood cell count
• Difficulty swallowing
• Heart problems (including coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, or family history of heart problems)
• Diabetes
• Obesity
• Sleep apnea

Disclose all medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal products. This is important because Geodon can interact with other medications, potentially increasing the risk of side effects.

Discuss current or potential pregnancy and breastfeeding plans with your healthcare provider. Geodon should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Geodon due to potential risks to the infant.

Be aware that Geodon may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery) until you know how the medication affects you.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take before any surgery.

This medication may affect your ability to regulate body temperature in hot weather. Stay hydrated, dress lightly, and avoid strenuous activities in hot environments.

Older adults may be more susceptible to certain side effects of Geodon.
