Compazine (prochlorperazine) is indicated for the treatment of severe nausea and vomiting caused by various factors, such as after surgery or cancer treatment. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phenothiazines and is not recommended for use in children younger than 2 years or in children going through surgery.

The typical dosage of Compazine is usually 5 mg to 10 mg taken orally 3 to 4 times daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response and the severity of the condition. For non-psychotic anxiety, the usual dosage is 5 mg 3 to 4 times daily. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on weight. 
Common Side Effects:
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness

  • Constipation

  • Low blood pressure
  • Missed menstrual periods (amenorrhea)
  • Increased appetite and weight gain

  1. Elderly patients with dementia: There may be a slightly increased risk of serious, possibly fatal side effects (such as heart failure, fast/irregular heartbeat, pneumonia) when Compazine is used by older adults with dementia. Compazine is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related behavior problems. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your healthcare provider
  2. Allergies and inactive ingredients: Before taking prochlorperazine, inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to it or other phenothiazines, or if you have any other allergies. Compazine may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your healthcare provider for more details
  3. Pediatric use: Compazine should not be used in pediatric patients under 20 pounds in weight or 2 years of age. Take particular precautions in administering the drug to children with acute illnesses or dehydration.
  4. Hepatotoxicity: Compazine has been associated with hepatotoxicity (liver damage). Regular monitoring of liver function may be necessary in patients taking Compazine.
  5. Neutropenia: Patients with severe neutropenia (low white blood cell count) should discontinue Compazine and have their white blood cell count followed until recovery.
