Rapaflo (Silodosin) is specifically used by men to address the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

While it does not shrink the prostate, it effectively relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the bladder. This action helps alleviate BPH symptoms such as difficulty initiating urine flow, weak stream, and the need for frequent or urgent urination, including during the night.

Silodosin, the active ingredient in Rapaflo, belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha-blockers. By acting as an alpha-adrenergic blocker, it works on the muscles in the prostate and bladder to promote relaxation. This mechanism aims to improve urine flow and facilitate complete bladder emptying, thereby addressing the symptoms associated with BPH.

Rapaflo should not be used to treat high blood pressure, as its primary indication is for managing the symptoms of BPH in men.

Do’s

  • Take Rapaflo exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily with a meal.
  • If swallowing capsules is difficult, open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on cool applesauce (not hot!). Swallow immediately (within 5 minutes) without chewing and followed with a full glass of cool water.
  • Take Rapaflo consistently, ideally with the same meal each day, for maximum benefit.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or doesn't improve.

Don'ts

  • Don't take Rapaflo more often or in larger doses than prescribed.
  • Don't chew the Rapaflo powder or store the applesauce mixture.
  • Don't engage in activities that could be dangerous if you faint, especially when starting Rapaflo, after a dose increase, or restarting treatment.
  • Don't take Rapaflo with hot applesauce.
  • Don't store the mixture for later use.
