Indocin (indomethacin) is indicated for the following purposes:

  • Moderate to Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis: Including acute flares of chronic disease.
  • Moderate to Severe Ankylosing Spondylitis: A type of arthritis that affects the spine.
  • Moderate to Severe Osteoarthritis: A degenerative joint disease that affects the cartilage and bones in the joints.
  • Acute Painful Shoulder (Bursitis and/or Tendinitis).

Do's

  • The dosage of Indocin is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on weight.
  • To reduce the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects, take this medication at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
  • For ongoing conditions such as arthritis, it should be continued to be taken as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • Indocin is taken by mouth, usually 2 to 3 times a day with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters).
  • Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this drug. If stomach upset occurs, it can be taken with food, milk, or an antacid.
  • If the medication is taken on an "as needed" basis, it is recommended to use it as the first signs of pain occur for best results.
  • In certain conditions, such as arthritis, it may take up to 4 weeks when the drug is taken regularly before the full benefits are noticed.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible but skipped if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
  • In case of overdose, emergency medical attention should be sought, and symptoms may include severe drowsiness, stomach pain, or vomiting.

Common Side Effects:

  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Serious Side Effects:

  • Signs of stomach bleeding, such as bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Kidney problems, indicated by little or no urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, feeling tired, or shortness of breath
  • Low red blood cells (anemia), characterized by pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed, or shortness of breath
  • Hearing changes, mental/mood changes (such as confusion, hallucinations), difficult/painful swallowing, and symptoms of numbness, pricking, burning, or creeping on the skin
  • Seizures
  • Other serious side effects may include heart attack, stroke, skin changes (paleness, blisters, rash, and hives), weight gain, swelling, shortness of breath, tachycardia, unusual bleeding (including GI bleeding), jaundice, stomach pain, and pain with urination

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, promptly inform a healthcare provider.

Indocin can increase the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, even in individuals without any risk factors. Indocin should not be used just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Indocin may cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning, especially in older adults.

Pregnant women are advised to avoid using Indocin and other NSAIDs starting at 30 weeks gestation due to the risk of premature closing of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Concomitant use of Indocin with other NSAIDs or salicylates is not recommended due to the increased risk of gastrointestinal toxicity.

Indocin may interact with other drugs. Consult a healthcare provider before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment.

Before undergoing any laboratory test, inform all healthcare providers about the use of indomethacin. Patients should keep a written list of all prescription and nonprescription medicines they are taking and bring it with them each time they visit a healthcare provider or are admitted to a hospital.
