Zyloprim (Allopurinol)

Do's

• Take Zyloprim exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
• Take Zyloprim after a meal to reduce stomach upset.
• Drink a full glass of water with each dose and at least 8 more glasses of fluid daily, unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider for other medical reasons.
• Take your medication regularly at the same time(s) each day.
• Continue taking your prescribed pain medication for gout attacks, as Zyloprim is not a pain reliever.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your gout symptoms worsen or persist.

Don't

• Do not take more than the prescribed dose or take it more often than prescribed.
• Do not stop taking Zyloprim without consulting your healthcare provider.
• If your dose is more than 300 mg daily, do not take it all at once, but split it into smaller doses throughout the day as directed by your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Rash
• Headache
• Drowsiness
• Vomiting
• Changes in taste
• Muscle pain
• Joint pain

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Numbness or tingling of the arms or legs
• Easy bleeding or bruising
• Unusual tiredness
• Signs of kidney problems, such as changes in urine amount or color, painful or bloody urination
• Signs of liver disease, such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine
• Eye pain or vision changes

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Zyloprim,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies to Zyloprim or other ingredients.

Disclose pre-existing conditions, especially liver, kidney disease, or alcohol use, which may interact with the medication.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Zyloprim, before any surgery.

Limit alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of liver problems, especially when combined with Zyloprim.

Be aware of potential increased sensitivity to side effects, particularly muscle problems.

Zyloprim should only be used in pregnancy when absolutely necessary and breastfeeding is not recommended due to unknown risks to the infant. Discuss these risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
