Hygroton (chlorthalidone) is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Essential arterial hypertension, as long as creatinine clearance is >30 mL/min; as primary therapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
  • Stable, chronic heart failure of mild to moderate degree (functional class II, III), as long as creatinine clearance is >30mL/min.
  • Ascites due to cirrhosis of the liver in stable patients under close control.

Do’s

  • Take this medication by mouth with food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily in the morning. 
  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. 
  • Keep taking this medication even if you feel well.
  • If you also take certain drugs to lower your cholesterol, take Hygroton at least 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after these medications.
  • Follow all directions given to you by your healthcare provider carefully. If you do not understand the instructions on the label, ask your healthcare provider for help.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.

Don’ts

  • Avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to avoid having to get up to urinate.

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness as the body adjusts to the medication 

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine)
  • Muscle cramps or weakness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Signs of an electrolyte imbalance (e.g., dry mouth, increased thirst, lack of energy, or muscle pain)
