Desowen Ointment (Desonide)

Do's

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after applying Desowen ointment.
• Gently clean and dry the affected area as directed by your healthcare provider. Pat the area dry instead of rubbing.
• Apply a thin film of Desowen ointment to the affected area only, following your healthcare provider's instructions on dosage and frequency.

Don'ts

• Don't eyes, nose, mouth: Do not apply Desowen ointment near your eyes, nose, or mouth.
• Don't use large areas/extended use: Don't use Desowen ointment on large areas of skin, especially for extended periods, unless directed by your healthcare provider. Long-term use can increase the risk of side effects.
• Don't break or infected skin: Don't apply Desowen ointment to broken, infected, or irritated skin.
• Don't sudden stop (long-term use): If you've been using Desowen ointment for a long time, don't suddenly stop using it without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't bandage (unless directed): Avoid bandaging or wrapping the treated area unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider, as this can trap moisture and worsen some conditions.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, peeling, or redness at the application site. These side effects are usually temporary and should improve as your body adjusts to Desowen ointment

Serious Side Effects:

• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Desowen ointment, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you have allergies to Desonide (the active ingredient in Desowen) or other corticosteroids. Additionally, disclose any allergies to inactive ingredients, especially if Desowen contains peanut oil.

Before using Desowen, tell your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions you have.

Do not use Desowen on infected or sore skin. It can worsen the infection. If you experience worsening redness, swelling, or irritation while using Desowen, consult your healthcare provider promptly.

Desowen should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before using it in these cases.

Prolonged use of Desowen, especially on sensitive areas like the face or areas with skin folds, can increase the risk of side effects like thinning skin, stretch marks, and discoloration.

Children may be more sensitive to Desowen and experience side effects more easily. Consult your healthcare provider before using Desowen on a child.

Desowen may interact with other medications you're taking. Inform your healthcare provider about all your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
