Cardizem CD (Diltiazem Hcl)

Do’s

• Take Cardizem CD exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
• Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush or chew them.
• Take it with or without food.
• Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including prescriptions, non-prescription, and herbal products.
• Take this medication regularly at the same time each day, even if you feel well.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or doesn't improve (e.g., high blood pressure readings or worsening chest pain).

Don't

• Don't crush or chew the capsules.
• Don't take Cardizem CD to treat sudden angina attacks. It's for prevention, not immediate relief. Use other medications as directed by your healthcare provider for angina attacks.

Common side effects:

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Bradycardia (slow heart rate)
• Edema (swelling)
• Nausea
• Upset stomach
• Rash

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if experienced):

• Chest pain
• Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
• Fainting
• New or worsening symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath, swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, or sudden weight gain
• Mental/mood changes, such as depression or agitation
• Severe stomach/abdominal pain
• Dark urine
• Yellowing of the eyes/skin

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Cardizem CD,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies to diltiazem or inactive ingredients to your healthcare provider before starting Cardizem CD.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing conditions, especially:

• Certain heart rhythm problems (sick sinus syndrome/atrioventricular block)
• Liver disease
• Kidney disease
• Heart failure

Cardizem CD may cause dizziness. Be cautious with activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery) until you know how this medication affects you. Limit alcohol and marijuana use, which can worsen dizziness.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications (including prescriptions, non-prescriptions, and herbal products) before any surgery.

Older adults may experience increased side effects, particularly dizziness, constipation, or ankle/foot swelling.

Cardizem CD should only be used when absolutely necessary and only after discussing risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as diltiazem passes into breast milk and may harm your baby.
