Persantine (Dipyridamole)

Do’s

• Take Persantine exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 4 times daily.
• Take the medication consistently at the same times each day for optimal benefit.
• Use Persantine regularly as prescribed by your healthcare provider to get the most out of it.

Don'ts

• Don't stop taking Persantine without first consulting your healthcare provider. Abruptly stopping this medication can be dangerous.
• Don't take Persantine at a different dosage or schedule than prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Common side effects:

• Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin), particularly at first as your body adjusts to the medication
• Mild stomach upset
• Dizziness
• Abdominal distress
• Headache
• Rash
• Itching
• Swollen tongue
• Changes in the nails
• Mild burning, itching, or redness
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Skin rash
• Itching
• Swollen tongue
• Discoloration of the skin or eyes
• Difficulty swallowing
• Change in the amount of urine

Serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention include:

• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat
• Fainting
• Stomach pain
• Yellowing of eyes/skin
• Dark urine
• Unusual bleeding/bruising
• Chest pain
• Confusion
• Severe headache
• Slurred speech
• Vision changes
• Weakness on one side of the body
• Sudden vision loss
• Blurred vision
• Tunnel vision
• Eye pain or swelling
• Seeing halos around lights
• Fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats
• Fluttering in the chest
• Shortness of breath
• Sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Persantine,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Let your healthcare provider know if you have any allergies to Persantine or its ingredients.

Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing health conditions, especially:

• Other heart problems (severe coronary artery disease, recent heart attack)
• Low blood pressure (hypotension)
• Liver disease
• Myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disorder)

Persantine may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until it's safe. Limit alcohol and marijuana use, which can worsen dizziness.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take (including Persantine) before any surgery.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, especially dizziness and bleeding.

Discuss the risks and benefits of Persantine with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Persantine passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
