Lovenox (Enoxaparin Sodium)

Do's

• Inject Lovenox under the skin, typically in your abdomen, at least 2 inches from your belly button. 
• Inject Lovenox at the same time(s) each day for optimal benefit. 
• Receive thorough instructions on preparation and usage from your healthcare provider and the medication package. 
• Visually inspect the medication before use and discard if you see any particles or discoloration. 
• Clean the injection site by rubbing alcohol before each injection. 
• Rotate injection sites to prevent skin damage. 
• Minimize bruising by avoiding rubbing the injection site afterward. 
• Learn proper storage and disposal methods for used supplies. 

The frequency and dosage depend on your specific condition and response to treatment. Age and weight can also play a role in some cases. Lovenox can also be administered intravenously (into a vein) by a healthcare provider. 

Common side effects may include:

• Bleeding gums
• Coughing up blood
• Difficulty with breathing or swallowing
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding
• Nosebleeds
• Paralysis
• Prolonged bleeding from cuts
• Red or black, tarry stools
• Red or dark brown urine
• Trouble breathing
• Bruising
• Chest discomfort or tightness
• Collection of blood under the skin
• Confusion
• Continuing bleeding or oozing from the nose or mouth, or surgical wound
• Fever
• Irritability
• Lightheadedness
• Lower back pain
• Pain or burning while urinating
• Seizures
• Swelling of the hands or feet
• Nausea or vomiting
• Nervousness

Serious side effects:

• Easy bleeding or bruising
• Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
• Changes in certain blood tests, such as liver function tests or cholesterol levels
• Chest pain or uneven heartbeats
• Signs of increased bleeding, such as blood in the urine or stools, or prolonged bleeding from cuts

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Lovenox,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, especially to Lovenox, heparin, pork products, or if you have any other allergies.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly if you have any of the following:

• Artificial heart valve(s)
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Bleeding problems
• Stroke
• High blood pressure
• Certain eye problems (diabetic retinopathy)
• Stomach ulcers (active or recent)
• Recent spinal procedures or punctures
• Spine problems
• Recent eye, brain, or spinal cord surgery

Limit alcohol consumption while taking Lovenox as it can increase the risk of bleeding.

Before any surgery or dental procedure, tell your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.

Be extra careful to avoid cuts, bruises, and injuries. Use caution with sharp objects and avoid contact sports.

Be aware of an increased risk of side effects for older adults, especially bleeding.

Lovenox should only be used if absolutely necessary during pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as it is unknown if Lovenox passes into breast milk.
