Avalide (Irbesartan/HCTZ)

Do’s

• Take Avalide exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
• Take it with or without food.
• If needed, take it at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid nighttime urination.
• Take it consistently at the same time each day for the best results.
• Continue taking Avalide even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or doesn't improve.

Don'ts

• Don't take more or less Avalide than prescribed.
• Don't take it with certain cholesterol-lowering medications (bile acid-binding resins) within 4 hours of each other.
• Don't abruptly stop taking Avalide without talking to your healthcare provider.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next one as usual. Don't take a double dose. Tell your healthcare provider about all your medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Common side effects of Avalide may include:

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Muscle cramps
• Dry cough
• Back pain
• Abdominal pain
• Increased urination

Serious side effects of Avalide are rare but may include:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Extreme thirst
• Very dry mouth
• Muscle cramps or weakness
• Fast or irregular heartbeat
• Confusion.
• Fainting

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Avalide,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies to irbesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or other medications.

Inform your healthcare provider about pre-existing conditions like gout, kidney/liver disease, lupus, dehydration, high potassium, or skin cancer.

Avalide may cause dizziness, so avoid activities requiring alertness (driving, operating machinery) until you feel stable. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen dizziness.

Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to dehydration. Report these to your healthcare provider and stay hydrated unless advised otherwise.

For diabetics, Avalide may affect blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly and inform your healthcare provider for potential adjustments to medications, exercise, or diet.

Avalide increases sun sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing. Report any sunburns, blisters, redness, or changes in moles/skin lesions to your healthcare provider.

Avalide may affect potassium levels. Consult your healthcare provider before taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications (prescription, non-prescription, herbal) before undergoing surgery.

Older Adults may experience increased side effects, especially dizziness and kidney problems.

Avoid taking Avalide during pregnancy as it can harm the unborn baby. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you plan to become pregnant. Safety during breastfeeding is unknown. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
