Avalide is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains two active ingredients: irbesartan, which is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diuretic (water pill).

The combination of these medications helps lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and increasing urine production to eliminate excess salt and water from the body. By reducing high blood pressure, Avalide can help prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems associated with hypertension.

Do’s

  • Take Avalide exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
  • Take it with or without food.
  • If needed, take it at least 4 hours before bedtime to avoid nighttime urination.
  • Take it consistently at the same time each day for the best results.
  • Continue taking Avalide even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or doesn't improve.

Don'ts

  • Don't take more or less Avalide than prescribed.
  • Don't take it with certain cholesterol-lowering medications (bile acid-binding resins) within 4 hours of each other.
  • Don't abruptly stop taking Avalide without talking to your healthcare provider.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next one as usual. Don't take a double dose. Tell your healthcare provider about all your medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
