Atacand HCT (Candesartan/HCTZ)

Do’s

• The dosage of Atacand HCT is typically based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Adhere to the prescribed dosage as determined by your healthcare provider.
• Atacand HCT is usually taken by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. 
• Take Atacand HCT regularly at the same time each day to derive the maximum benefit from the medication. 
• Even if you start feeling well, continue taking this medication unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider, as many individuals with high blood pressure may not experience noticeable symptoms.
• If you are also taking certain drugs to lower your cholesterol, such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol, take Atacand HCT at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications.
• If you have any questions about your dosing schedule or any concerns about your condition, consult your healthcare provider for guidance

Don’ts

• Avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of bedtime to minimize the need to urinate during the night.

Common Side Effects:

• High potassium levels
• Cold symptoms such as stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat
• Dizziness
• Abnormal kidney test

Serious Side Effects:

• Signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

In rare cases, Atacand HCT can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever, unusual tiredness, and dark-colored urine.

Atacand HCT should not be used during pregnancy, and if pregnancy is detected, it should be discontinued as soon as possible. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your healthcare provider if you become pregnant.

Candesartan, one of the components of Atacand HCT, may harm an unborn baby and passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Patients with heart failure should be closely monitored when starting Atacand HCT therapy, as excessive hypotension may lead to complications such as oliguria, azotemia, and acute renal failure.
