Topicort Gel (Desoximetasone)

Do’s

Topicort gel is intended for topical use only and should not be used orally, ophthalmically, or intravaginally.

Before applying the medication, wash and dry your hands, as well as the affected area of the skin.

Gently apply a thin layer of Topicort gel to the affected area as directed by your healthcare provider. Rub it in gently until it is absorbed by the skin. The usual frequency of application is twice daily.

After applying the medication, wash your hands unless you are using Topicort gel to treat your hands specifically.

Use Topicort gel only for the condition prescribed by your healthcare provider.

If your condition does not improve or worsens after using Topicort gel, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

Do not use Topicort gel on the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed to do so by your healthcare provider.

Do not cover the treated area with bandages or dressings, unless directed by your healthcare provider.

Avoid getting Topicort gel in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

Do not use Topicort gel for longer than prescribed.

Common Side Effects: 

Burning or stinging sensation at the application site

Itching or irritation

Dryness or peeling of the skin

Serious Side Effects: 

Severe skin irritation or allergic reactions

Signs of skin infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or oozing

Thinning of the skin or easy bruising

Changes in skin color

Unusual hair growth

Acne-like eruptions

Stretch marks

Eye problems, such as glaucoma or cataracts

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, call your healthcare provider immediately.

Topicort gel can be absorbed into the bloodstream in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects. This is more likely to occur when using large amounts of the medication or when using it for a prolonged period. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration of use.

If you are breastfeeding, minimize potential exposure to the breastfed infant via breast milk. Use Topicort gel on the smallest area of skin and for the shortest duration possible while breastfeeding. Avoid applying it directly to the nipple and areola to avoid direct infant exposure.

For elderly patients, dose selection should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range. This is because elderly individuals may have decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, as well as concomitant diseases or other drug therapies that can affect the absorption and metabolism of Topicort gel.
