Rinvoq (Upadacitinib)

Do’s

Before starting Rinvoq, read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. 

Rinvoq is typically taken once daily, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and other medications you may be taking. Follow your healthcare provider's prescribed dosage.

Rinvoq should be taken by mouth and swallowed whole. Take it regularly at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it. If you have any questions about the administration of Rinvoq, consult your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, herbal products, and supplements, as they may interact with Rinvoq. 

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using Rinvoq, unless your healthcare provider says it's safe to do so, as grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medication.

Don’ts

Do not increase the prescribed dosage without your healthcare provider’s guidance.

Rinvoq should not be crushed, chewed, or split, as doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.

Common Side Effects: 

Cough

Fever

Nausea

Upper respiratory tract infections, such as the common cold.

These side effects are usually temporary, lasting for a few days or weeks. However, if they persist, become severe, or cause concern, discuss them with a healthcare provider.

Some people taking Rinvoq may see medicine residue (a whole tablet or tablet pieces) in their stool, which should be reported to a healthcare provider.

Do not take Rinvoq if you are allergic to upadacitinib or any of the ingredients in Rinvoq. Review the Medication Guide or Consumer Brief Summary for a complete list of ingredients. If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

Patients treated with Rinvoq are at an increased risk of developing infections that may lead to hospitalization or death. These infections include tuberculosis (TB) and invasive fungal, bacterial, viral, and other infections due to opportunistic pathogens. Inform your healthcare provider if you are being treated for an infection, have an infection that won't go away or keeps coming back, or have symptoms of an infection, such as fever, sweating, chills, shortness of breath, and more. Rinvoq treatment should be interrupted if a serious infection develops until the infection is controlled.

A separation or tear to the lining of the back part of the eye (retinal detachment) has happened in people with atopic dermatitis treated with Rinvoq. Contact a healthcare provider right away if any sudden vision changes occur during treatment with Rinvoq.

Rinvoq can weaken the immune system, lowering the likelihood that the body will respond properly to vaccines. Talk with a healthcare provider before getting any vaccines while taking Rinvoq.
