Treximet is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older. It is a combination of sumatriptan, a serotonin (5-HT) 1b/1d receptor agonist (triptan), and naproxen sodium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It works well for treating moderate-to-severe migraine attacks and is a good option if other migraine medications haven't worked. However, Treximet does not prevent migraines from happening and should not be used to prevent migraine headaches or to treat cluster headaches.

Do’s

  • Before starting to use Treximet and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If there are any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Take Treximet by mouth at the first sign of a migraine as directed by your healthcare provider, with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters).
  • To prevent stomach upset, take this medication with food, milk, or an antacid.
  • The dosage of Treximet is based on the individual's medical condition, age, and response to treatment.
  • If symptoms are only partly relieved, or if the headache comes back, another dose may be taken at least two hours after the first dose. However, not more than 2 doses should be taken in 24 hours.
  • If there is a higher risk for heart problems, your healthcare provider may perform a heart exam before starting the medication. The first dose of this medication may be taken in the office/clinic to monitor for serious side effects, especially for individuals with a higher risk of heart problems.
  • If drugs for migraine attacks are used on 10 or more days each month, they may actually make headaches worse (medication overuse headache).

Don’ts

  • Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this drug.
  • Do not break, crush, or chew the tablets.
  • Do not take more doses of this medication if there is no improvement in symptoms without consulting a healthcare provider.
  • Do not use medications more often or for longer than directed. Any changes in the frequency or effectiveness of the medication should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Anaphylactic reactions

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and individuals should consult their healthcare provider for a comprehensive understanding of potential reactions to Treximet.

Patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular disease may be at greater risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal.

Treximet is contraindicated in certain patients, including those with ischemic coronary artery disease, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, arrhythmias associated with other cardiac accessory conduction pathway disorders, history of asthma, uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood circulation problems, severe liver disease, and severe allergic reaction to aspirin or an NSAID.

Treximet contains a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which can increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms.

Treximet should not be used just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).

Treximet should not be used to prevent migraines, and using a migraine tracker may help pinpoint the causes of migraines.

Treximet should not be taken in the third trimester of pregnancy, and its safety in the first two trimesters is unknown. It is also unknown whether it is safe to breastfeed while taking Treximet.
