Zomig (zolmitriptan) is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. It should only be used where a clear diagnosis of migraine has been established.

Do’s

  • Zomig should be taken by mouth with or without food at the first sign of a migraine, as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • The dosage of Zomig is based on the individual's medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications they may be taking. Inform the healthcare provider about all the products being used, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.
  • If symptoms are only partly relieved or if the headache returns, another dose may be taken at least two hours after the first dose. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully.
  • If there is a higher risk for heart problems, the healthcare provider may perform a heart exam before starting Zomig. In some cases, the first dose of the medication may be taken in the office/clinic to monitor for serious side effects, such as chest pain.

Don’ts

  • If there is no improvement in symptoms, do not take more doses of this medication before consulting a healthcare provider.
  • Do not take more than 10 milligrams in a 24-hour period. Some patients may be directed to not take more than 5 milligrams in a 24-hour period.
  • Overuse of Zomig may lead to medication overuse headache (MOH). It should not be taken to treat more than three migraine episodes per month. Symptoms of MOH can include daily migraine headaches or more frequent migraine episodes than usual. If MOH develops from overuse, the healthcare provider will likely have the patient stop Zomig treatment.

Zomig is contraindicated in patients with ischemic coronary artery disease, other significant underlying cardiovascular disease, or coronary artery vasospasm, including Prinzmetal's angina. It is also contraindicated in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome or arrhythmias associated with other cardiac accessory conduction pathway disorders.

Patients with a higher risk for heart problems may require a heart exam before starting Zomig. This includes individuals with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or a strong family history of coronary artery disease.

Zomig may interact with other drugs, including certain triptan drugs, the antacid cimetidine, and the Parkinson's drug selegiline. Discuss all medications being taken with a healthcare provider to avoid potential interactions.

Zomig may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or factors that affect their health. Discuss one's health history with a healthcare provider before taking Zomig, especially if there is a history of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or hemiplegic or basilar migraine.

Zomig may not be prescribed for individuals with a genetic condition called phenylketonuria.

Caution should be exercised when administering Zomig to women who are breastfeeding, as zolmitriptan passes into the milk of lactating animals.

Zomig has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines, but somnolence may occur.
