Frova (Frovatriptan Succinate)

Do’s

• The dosage of Frova is based on the individual's medical condition and response to treatment. It is typically taken by mouth at the first sign of a migraine headache.
• This medication may be taken with or without food, but it may work faster when taken on an empty stomach.
• The U.S. manufacturer recommends that individuals may take another dose after 2 hours, up to a maximum of 3 doses (7.5 milligrams) in 24 hours. However, the Canadian manufacturer recommends that individuals may take another dose after 4 hours, up to a maximum of 2 doses (5 milligrams) in 24 hours.
• For individuals with a higher risk for heart problems, the healthcare provider may perform a heart exam before starting Frova. 
• The first dose of the medication may also be taken in a medical facility where the individual can be monitored for serious reactions.
• Follow the healthcare provider's directions for using Frova and seek medical advice if headaches do not improve or occur more frequently after taking the medication.

Don’t

• Avoid using medications for migraine attacks on 10 or more days each month, as they may make headaches worse (medication overuse headache). 
• Do not use this medication more often or for longer than directed, and consult your healthcare provider if you feel the need to use this medication more frequently or if it is not working as well.

Common Side Effects: 

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Weakness
• Tiredness
• Mild headache
• Mild chest pain or pressure
• Tightness in the jaw or neck
• Pressure or heavy feeling in any part of the body
• Warmth or redness in the face, neck, or chest

Serious Adverse Reactions: 

• Anaphylaxis
• Angioedema

Promptly seek medical attention if you experience any severe or concerning side effects after taking Frova.

Anaphylactic reactions have occurred in patients receiving Frova. These reactions can be life-threatening or fatal, and individuals should seek immediate medical attention if they experience anaphylactic symptoms.

The use of drugs to treat acute migraines for 10 or more days per month may lead to an exacerbation of headache. Patients are encouraged to record headache frequency and drug use to monitor their condition.

There is a risk of serotonin syndrome with the use of Frova or other triptans, particularly during combined use with certain medications such as SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, and MAO inhibitors.

The safety of using Frova in pregnant women has not been fully established. Consult with a healthcare provider regarding the use of Frova during pregnancy.

Frova should not be used in individuals with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, coronary artery disease, blood circulation problems, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease, a history of heart attack or stroke, or if the headache seems different from usual migraine headaches.

Individuals should discuss their medical history and any potential risks with their healthcare provider before using Frova.
