Cafergot is used to treat or prevent certain types of headaches, including vascular headaches like migraines and cluster headaches. The medication contains ergotamine and caffeine.

Ergotamine works by narrowing widened blood vessels in the head, while caffeine increases the absorption of ergotamine and also narrows blood vessels.

Cafergot should be taken at the first sign of a migraine headache, with a maximum of 6 tablets per migraine attack and 10 tablets in a 7-day period. It is not effective for other types of headaches and lacks analgesic properties.

  • Take Cafergot exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Take it at the first sign of a headache for best results.

    • Headache prevention (if prescribed): Take as directed by your healthcare provider, usually for a short period (2-3 weeks).
  • Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Cafergot abruptly.
