Maxalt MLT (Rizatriptan) is utilized to treat migraines, providing relief from headache, pain, and other associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Prompt treatment with Rizatriptan aids in returning to normal routines and may reduce the need for other pain medications.

Rizatriptan belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans. It acts on serotonin, a natural substance that causes the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. Additionally, it may relieve pain by affecting certain nerves in the brain. Rizatriptan does not prevent future migraines or reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

Do’s

  • Take Maxalt MLT exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, at the first sign of a migraine.
  • Handle the tablets with dry hands.
  • Place the tablet on your tongue, allow it to dissolve, and swallow with your saliva. You don't need water.
  • Take it with or without food, but it may work faster on an empty stomach.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all your medications, including prescriptions, non-prescription, and herbal products.
  • If your migraine is only partly relieved or comes back after 2 hours (adults only), take another dose, but not more than the recommended amount (30mg in US, 20mg in Canada) in 24 hours.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider if you need to use Maxalt MLT more often than prescribed or if it's not working as well.

Don'ts

  • Don't break, crush, or open the blister pack until you're ready to take the dose.
  • Don't take more Maxalt MLT than prescribed, even if your migraine isn't relieved.
  • Don't take Maxalt MLT if you are allergic to rizatriptan.
  • Don't use Maxalt MLT for more than 10 days per month to avoid medication overuse headaches.
