Tarceva, also known as erlotinib, is a kinase inhibitor used for the treatment of certain types of cancer. It is primarily indicated for:

  1. Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): Tarceva is used for the treatment of patients with metastatic NSCLC whose tumors have epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 19 deletions or exon 21 (L858R) substitution mutations. This includes patients receiving first-line, maintenance, or second or greater-line treatment after progression following at least one prior chemotherapy regimen.
  2. Pancreatic Cancer: Tarceva, in combination with gemcitabine, is indicated for the first-line treatment of patients with locally advanced, unresectable, or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Do’s

  • Tarceva is typically taken by mouth on an empty stomach, usually once daily, as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • The dosage of Tarceva is based on the individual's medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications being taken.
  • Take Tarceva regularly to obtain the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time each day can help maintain a steady level of the drug in the body, thus enhancing its effectiveness.
  • Medications that lower stomach acid, such as antacids and H2 blockers, may prevent erlotinib from working. Consult your healthcare provider on how to use these medications safely with Tarceva.

Don’ts

  • Do not increase the dose or use the drug more often or for longer than prescribed, as this can increase the risk of serious side effects without improving the condition any faster.
  • Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or breathing the dust from the tablets, as the drug can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby.
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided while using Tarceva, as they can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine
  • Smoking should be avoided while using Tarceva, as it can make the medication less effective.
  • Exposure to sunlight or tanning beds should be avoided, as erlotinib can cause skin rash, dryness, or other irritation. Protective clothing and sunscreen should be used when outdoors.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite
  • Cough, trouble breathing
  • Skin changes, including a skin rash, dry skin, itching, increased growth of body hair, or loose, brittle nails on fingers or toes
  • Feeling weak or tired

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions: Symptoms may include rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. An allergic reaction to Tarceva is rare, but medical help should be sought immediately if any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction are noticed.
  • Kidney or liver problems: Symptoms may include little or no urinating, swelling, rapid weight gain (especially in the face and midsection), nausea, vomiting, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

The above lists are not exhaustive, and other side effects may occur. If any side effects are experienced, contact a healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tarceva should not be taken during pregnancy, as it could harm the unborn baby. Effective birth control should be used while taking this medication and for at least 1 month after the last dose. Discuss alternative feeding methods with a healthcare provider if considering Tarceva treatment while breastfeeding.

Before taking Tarceva, inform the healthcare provider about any lung problems (other than lung cancer), kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or smoking habits.

All chemotherapy drugs taken by mouth, including Tarceva, can pose a health hazard to caregivers and patients. Care should be taken when handling this medicine to prevent skin contact and ensure the safety of both the patient and the caregiver.

Regular medical monitoring, including lab tests for kidney and liver function, may be necessary while taking Tarceva. Keep all medical and lab appointments.

Discuss any concerns or questions about the warnings and precautions of Tarceva with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized information and guidance based on individual health conditions and medical history.
