Leucovorin is used to treat or prevent serious blood cell disorders caused by specific medications. These blood cell disorders include:

  • Thrombocytopenia: Low blood platelet count, which can lead to easy bruising or bleeding.
  • Neutropenia: Low neutrophil count, a type of white blood cell important for fighting infections.
  • Anemia: Low red blood cell count, causing fatigue and weakness.

Leucovorin is specifically used to address these disorders when caused by certain drugs known as folic acid antagonists. Examples include methotrexate, trimethoprim, and pyrimethamine.
