Leucovorin (Calcium Folinate)

Do's

• Take the medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, including dosage, frequency, and whether to take it with or without food. 
• Take it regularly at the same time(s) each day for maximum benefit. 
• Inform your healthcare provider if nausea or vomiting prevents you from taking the medication orally, as they may switch you to the injection form. 

Leucovorin’s dosage depends on your specific medical condition and how well you respond to treatment. 

Common side effects may include:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Itching
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Serious side effects:

• Severe allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, hives, or trouble breathing
• Symptoms of methotrexate toxicity, such as mouth sores, diarrhea, vomiting, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, weakness, or fever
• Symptoms of anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12, such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin, or rapid heartbeat

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Leucovorin,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including allergies to leucovorin, levoleucovorin, folic acid, or folinic acid.

Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history, especially if you have a certain type of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.

Disclose all medications you take (prescription, non-prescription, and herbal) to your healthcare provider or dentist before having surgery.

Leucovorin should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

The safety of Leucovorin during breastfeeding is unknown. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
