Hydrea (Hydroxyurea)

Do’s

• Take Hydrea exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily. 
• Swallow capsules whole with water and only split them if instructed by your healthcare provider. 
• Wash hands before and after handling the medication or its container. 
• Clean up spills immediately with a wet paper towel and dispose of them properly. Wash the spill area with soap and water. 
• Wear gloves when handling Hydrea to avoid direct contact. 

Don'ts

• Don't crush, chew, or open Hydrea capsules. 
• Do not increase the dose, use the medication more often, or for longer than prescribed. 
• Avoid inhaling the powder from Hydrea capsules. 
• Don’t handle Hydrea if you are pregnant or are planning pregnancy as it may pose potential risks to the unborn child. 

Dosage is based on individual factors like weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. 

Common Side Effects:

• Reduced appetite
• Sores in the mouth or throat
• Digestive side effects
• Low levels of blood cells

Serious Side Effects

• Cancers, such as other forms of leukemia and skin cancer. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, weight loss, and skin sores that bleed or don't heal.
• Severe skin ulcers (sores) with symptoms such as pain, swelling, tenderness, itching, scabbing or flaking, and redness or discoloration.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Hydrea,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies you have, including to Hydrea itself or other medications.

Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider, especially if you have:

• Blood/bone marrow problems (low red/white blood cells and platelets)
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• HIV infection
• High uric acid levels
• Received radiation treatment

Hydrea increases your risk of infections. Avoid contact with people who are sick and tell your healthcare provider if you are exposed to an infection.

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take before having surgery or immunizations.

Be cautious to avoid cuts and injuries.

Inform your healthcare provider about your pregnancy status. This medication can harm an unborn baby and requires reliable birth control for both men and women during treatment and after.

Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Hydrea.
