Tambocor, also known as flecainide acetate, is a Class 1 anti-arrhythmic (local anesthetic) agent used in certain situations to prevent serious heart rhythm disorders. It is indicated for the following conditions when they are resistant to other therapy or when other treatment is unsatisfactory:

  • Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias, including atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia, atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia, and other supraventricular tachycardias of unspecified mechanism.
  • Documented ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia (sustained VT), that in the judgment of the healthcare provider are life-threatening.

Do’s

  • Tambocor should be taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.
  • Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help remember, take it at the same times each day.
  • If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your healthcare provider.
  • Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your heart rate will be monitored using an electrocardiograph or ECG to determine the duration of treatment with Tambocor.

Tambocor should not be used if you have a serious heart condition such as bundle branch block or AV block (without a pacemaker), or if your heart cannot pump blood properly.

In patients with sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT), the use of higher initial doses and more rapid dosage adjustments have resulted in an increased incidence of proarrhythmic events and congestive heart failure (CHF), particularly during the first few days of dosing.

Tambocor should be used cautiously in patients with a history of CHF or myocardial dysfunction. Any use of Tambocor in children should be directly supervised by a healthcare provider skilled in the treatment of arrhythmias in children.

Small increases in plasma digoxin levels are seen during the coadministration of Tambocor with digoxin. Additionally, small increases in both flecainide and propranolol plasma levels are seen during the coadministration of these two drugs.

The use of Tambocor in chronic atrial fibrillation has not been adequately studied and is not recommended.

Hypokalemia or hyperkalemia may alter the effects of Tambocor.

Tambocor may interact with other drugs, and its use should be carefully monitored by a healthcare provider. Before taking any drug, changing any diet, or commencing or discontinuing any course of treatment, consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

If you have any concerns or questions about the use of Tambocor, discuss them with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and recommendations.
