Sectral (Acebutolol)

Do’s

• The dosage of Sectral is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. It is usually taken once or twice daily.
• Sectral should be taken by mouth with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. 
• Take the medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.
• It may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug for the treatment of high blood pressure. Keep taking it even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.
• If your condition does not improve or gets worse, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase, you should inform your healthcare provider.

• Fatigue
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Dyspepsia (indigestion)
• Nausea

Most adverse reactions to Sectral have been mild and tend to decrease as the duration of treatment increases. If you experience any of these side effects and find them bothersome or if they persist, consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Serious Side Effects:

• Shortness of breath or wheezing
• Swelling of the feet and lower legs
• Chest pain

If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

If you have a known allergy to acebutolol or any other beta-blockers, you should not take Sectral. Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms like rash and itching to severe reactions that require immediate medical attention.

Sectral is primarily used to treat hypertension and heart rhythm disorders. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain heart conditions, such as heart failure or certain types of heart block. Discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider before starting Sectral.

Beta-blockers like Sectral can potentially worsen symptoms in individuals with asthma or other breathing problems. If you have a history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), inform your healthcare provider before taking Sectral.

Sectral can mask some of the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in individuals with diabetes. This can make it more difficult to recognize and treat low blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely while taking Sectral.

If you are scheduled for surgery, including dental surgery, inform your healthcare provider that you are taking Sectral. The medication may interact with certain anesthetics and can affect your body's response to the surgery.

Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as they may interact with Sectral. Certain medications, such as calcium channel blockers and other beta-blockers, can have interactions with Sectral.

The safety of Sectral during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well-established. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding.
