Procardia is a calcium channel blocker that is primarily indicated for the following conditions:

  1. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Procardia is used to treat hypertension, which is characterized by high blood pressure.
  2. Angina (Chest Pain): It is also used to treat angina, specifically vasospastic angina confirmed by certain criteria, and chronic stable angina (effort-associated angina) without evidence of vasospasm in patients who remain symptomatic despite adequate doses of beta blockers and/or organic nitrates or who cannot tolerate those agents.

Do’s

  • Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 times daily. Swallow the medication whole. 
  • The dosage of Procardia is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. Your healthcare provider may gradually increase your dose, follow their instructions carefully.
  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
  • If your condition worsens, such as your chest pain becoming more frequent or severe, inform your healthcare provider.

Don’ts

  • Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule.
  • Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your healthcare provider says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine.

  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Swelling ankles/feet
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Fast heartbeat

Serious Side Effects:

  • Rash
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the serious side effects occur.

You should not use Procardia if you are allergic to it. Inform your healthcare provider about any known allergies before taking this medication.

You may not be able to use Procardia if your heart cannot pump blood properly. Discuss any existing heart conditions with your healthcare provider before starting this medication.

Inform your healthcare provider about all your current medicines, as many drugs can interact, and some drugs should not be used together.

When you start or stop taking other medications, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your Procardia dosage. Communicate any changes in your medication regimen with your healthcare provider.

If you are 65 years of age or older, talk to your healthcare provider about the safe use of Procardia, as older adults may not usually take them due to safety concerns.
