Lodine (Etodolac) is used to manage pain from various conditions and to reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with arthritis.

Etodolac belongs to the class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs work by blocking the production of certain substances in the body that cause inflammation.

Do's

  • Take Lodine exactly as prescribed, typically 2-4 times daily.
  • Take Lodine with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 10 minutes afterwards. If needed, take Lodine with food, milk, or an antacid.
  • Discuss the potential risks and benefits of Lodine with your healthcare provider.
  • Take the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration to minimize the risk of side effects, especially stomach bleeding.
  • Wait up to 2 weeks of regular use to experience the full pain-relieving effects for conditions like arthritis.
  • Take Lodine "as needed" at the first signs of pain for optimal effectiveness. Waiting for the pain to worsen can make the medication less effective.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if your condition worsens while taking Lodine.

Don'ts

  • Never increase the dose, take Lodine more often, or use it longer than prescribed without consulting your healthcare provider.

The dosage is personalized based on your individual needs and how well your body responds to the medication.

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Rash
  • Ringing in the ears

Serious side effects:

  • Signs of stomach bleeding, such as bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Signs of liver problems, such as nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Signs of kidney problems, such as little or no urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, or feeling tired
  • Low red blood cells (anemia), which may cause pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed, or cold hands and feet.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking  Lodine,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Disclose any allergies to etodolac, aspirin, other NSAIDs, or any ingredients in Lodine.

Inform your healthcare provider about pre-existing conditions like asthma, blood disorders, nasal polyps, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, stroke, swelling, or stomach/intestinal/esophageal problems.

NSAIDs like Lodine can impact kidney function, especially for those dehydrated, with heart/kidney issues, older adults, or on specific medications. Drink plenty of fluids and report any changes in urine color or amount.

Lodine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness until you feel safe. Limit alcohol and marijuana use which can worsen these effects.

Lodine may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Limit alcohol and tobacco use which can further elevate this risk.

Lodine can increase sun sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, use sunscreen and protective clothing. Report any sunburn or skin reactions to your healthcare provider.

Inform your healthcare provider or dentist about all medications you take, including Lodine, before any surgery.

Older adults are at higher risk for side effects like stomach bleeding, kidney problems, heart attack, and stroke while taking Lodine.

Lodine can harm an unborn baby and is not recommended, especially during the later stages of pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before using it. In addition, consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding as it's unknown if Lodine passes into breast milk.
