Celebrex (celecoxib) is indicated for the following:

  • Treating pain and redness, swelling, and heat (inflammation) from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in patients 2 years and older, and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Management of acute pain in adults.
  • Management of menstrual cramps.
  • It is also used to relieve symptoms caused by arthritis, such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain, although it does not cure arthritis and will only provide relief as long as it is continued to be taken.

Do's

  • Take Celebrex by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily.
  • To reduce the chance of stomach upset, it is best taken with food.
  • Take this medication at the lowest effective dose and only for the prescribed length of time. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • Take Celebrex with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) unless your healthcare provider directs you otherwise.  It is advised not to lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. For certain conditions, such as arthritis, it may take up to two weeks of taking this drug regularly before the full benefit is realized.
  • If you are taking this drug on an "as needed" basis, remember that pain medications work best if they are used as the first signs of pain occur.
  • Take Celebrex exactly as directed. If you have any questions or concerns, consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Don'ts

  • It is advised not to lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication.
  • Do not wait until the pain has worsened as it may result in the medication not working as effectively.
  • Stomach pain
  • Heartburn
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling in the hands or feet
  • Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat
  • Severe headache
  • Pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf
  • Signs of kidney problems (such as little or no urination, swelling in the feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath)
  • Low red blood cells (anemia) (pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed or short of breath, cold hands and feet)

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects while taking Celebrex, consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

This medication has been prescribed because your healthcare provider has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. However, being aware of the potential side effects and seeking medical advice is recommended if needed.

Celebrex may cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. These conditions can occur without warning while using this medicine, especially in older adults. It is not recommended to take this medicine if there is already bleeding in the stomach or intestines.

The risk of bleeding, ulcers, and tears (perforation) of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines is increased with NSAID medications like Celebrex. These events may happen without warning and may cause death. This risk may be higher for people who take NSAIDs for a long time.

Concomitant use of corticosteroids with Celebrex may increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.

Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history as dosage adjustment may be warranted when Celebrex is administered with certain medications.

The use of Celebrex should be carefully considered, and the lowest effective dosage should be used for the shortest duration consistent with individual patient treatment goals.

Your healthcare provider should monitor you or your child's progress through routine check-ups while using Celebrex.
