Elmiron, also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium, is a medication specifically indicated for the relief of bladder pain or discomfort associated with a condition known as interstitial cystitis. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that causes bladder pain and pressure. Elmiron is not a cure for interstitial cystitis, but it helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with this condition.

Do’s

  • Before starting Elmiron, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions. 
  • Elmiron is typically taken orally at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 3 times daily. 
  • Use Elmiron regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if your condition worsens or does not improve after 3 months. Regular monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are essential for assessing the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Elmiron should be used only as prescribed by your healthcare provider, and any changes to the dosage or frequency should be discussed with them.

Don’ts

  • Do not increase your dose or take Elmiron more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

There haven't been well-controlled studies of Elmiron with pregnant women. Avoid using it when pregnant.

Elmiron can cause changes in the retina of the eye, which can damage vision. Discuss this risk with your healthcare provider before taking Elmiron.
