Elmiron, also known as pentosan polysulfate sodium, is a medication specifically indicated for the relief of bladder pain or discomfort associated with a condition known as interstitial cystitis. Do’s

Don’ts

  • Do not increase your dose or take Elmiron more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

Elmiron has a weak anticoagulant effect, which may increase bleeding times. Patients should be reminded of this effect and take precautions to reduce the risk of bleeding.

There haven't been well-controlled studies of Elmiron with pregnant women. Avoid using it when pregnant.

Elmiron can cause changes in the retina of the eye, which can damage vision. Discuss this risk with your healthcare provider before taking Elmiron.
